Compassion fatigue: Nurses’ price of caring with the heart : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background Compassion fatigue is related to secondary traumatic stress and burnout. The concept is characterized by emotional, mental and physical exhaustion which often affects the people whose profession is to care for other people in different ways. Compassion fatigue innurses may result in decreased patient safety.

Aim The aim was to describe nurses’ experiences and management of compassion fatigue.

Method A structured literature review with elements of systematic methodology was conducted. The articles were obtained through the databases CINAHL and PubMed. A result of 15 articles of qualitative and quantitative methods were used for the literature review. The articles were then analysed in accordance with Friberg’s analysis method.

Results The results showed that compassion fatigue could occur when nurses experienced suffering, sadness or crisis in their work or were exposed to prolonged and stressful contact with patients. Compassion fatigue could lead to nurses being affected emotionally and physically in their private and work lives. Nurses had different strategies to counter the experience of compassion fatigue.

Conclusions The experience of compassion fatigue in nurses meant consequences for the physical and psychological well-being, but also compromises regarding social life. By making nurses' experience and management visible, conditions to develop additional tools and knowledge about managing emotions and experiences can be enabled.
