Abstract [en]

This study was made to research the use of populist rhetoric used by two american presidents who have come to be labled populists – Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump. The study was done by analysing the use of populist rhetoric in their nomination- and in agurationpeeches respectively. The topic was chosen due to the rise in the use of and normalization of populist rhetoric on the political arena, especially in America. While studies have been done with the purpose of analysing populism in America before, this study aims to compare and analyze the use of populism in relation to the political slogan Make America Great Again used by both Reagan and Trump. The study used the political scientist Jan-Werner Müllers five criteria when assessing the rhetoric used in the speeches. The study found that the rhetoric used by both presidents can be labled as populist but that they use it in different ways with different messages and goals.
