Girlpower och Jihad: Västerländska kvinnor inom Islamiska staten
2016 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

The Islamic state has been able to recruit women from all over the world with sophisticated use of social media and with a powerful rhetoric that aims to unify Jihadists and create a caliphate. A growing number of Western women are leaving home for the cause of Jihad. This essay aims to analyze the phenomenon of foreign females migrating to the Islamic state and how the Islamic state is drawing women from Western countries with supposed access to, what we often describe as secular freedoms, to join an extremist group well known for its violent ideology and its brutal treatment of women. My method has been reading, comparing and analyzing research and articles with my theoretical lens i.e. social identity theory, transnational activist network theory and the theories of female empowerment. Hopefully this essay will contribute to a broader understanding of the phenomenon of foreign females migrating to the Islamic state.
