This study aims to investigate Swedes' views on state funding to religious organizations overtime. It also aims to investigate how the variables gender, age, placement on the left-right scale and membership in religious organizations correlate with the attitude on the matter. Government subsidies to religious organizations has aroused great debate in recent years, both in the public debate and on a political level. Previous research regarding the view of government subsidies is very limited and only seem to consist of one study from 2007. Government subsidies is both a current and relevant topic to study further and one of the purposes of the study is to try to fill the knowledge gap that prevails. To answer the study's questions at issue, secondary data was used from the SOM Institute. The study is based on three national SOM surveys from 2006, 2016 and 2018. Based on Ronald Inglehart's theory regarding postmaterialist values, value changes and the concepts from the Culture Map, the results were analyzed through statistical analyses in terms of frequency tables, cross-tables and logistic regression analysis.

As expected, the survey showed a trend where the proportion who are negative towards government subsidies has increased between the first survey in 2006 and third survey in 2018. However, the group that had negative attitudes towards government subsidies decreased between 2006 and 2016, which was unexpected based on the theories used in the study. Furthermore, the analysis showed that the variable that had greatest impact on attitude on subsidies was membership in religious organizations, which was expected based on Inglehart's reasoning about traditional versus secular values. Moreover, people with religious values are considered to be more positive towards government subsidies as opposed to non-religious people or more specifically non-members of religious organizations. This study has only filled a small gap of knowledge regarding views on government subsidies to religious organizations, but nonetheless hope to inspire further studies on the issue.
