Hysteresis in cycle ergometers (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The subject of study in this project was a phenomenon that Monark Exercise has had problems with during the development of a new cycle ergometer. The problem is a hysteresis that occurs depending on whether you raise or lower the resistance to a certain level. A test rig for cycle ergometers in the test environment on Dalarna University sports laboratory has been used for experiments to solve the problems.

The purpose of the study was to understand why the hysteresis exists and how to eliminate or reduce it without affecting the accuracy of the cycle ergometer.

Through the use of the problem solving method DMAIC and design of experiments, an understanding of the problem and the factors that affect the hysteresis has been built. The results from the study showed that the material in the break belt had the largest impact on the hysteresis. A prototype for a new break belt has been made and the verifying tests showed that it reduced the hysteresis by 80 % without affecting the accuracy of the cycle ergometer. The study also resulted in suggestions for further work to reduce the hysteresis even more as well as to make the cycle ergometer more robust to noise factors.
