Remote work – freedom or boundless labor? (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to examine the changed working conditions that comes with remote work as a form of labor. Previous research showed that remote work can lead to an increase in efficiency and subjective well-being but that it can also lead to problems with the demarcation between work life and personal life. The theories which were applicated to this phenomenon were Martin Hägglund’s (2020) thoughts about technological development and how it should liberate man by giving her more ‘free time’ outside of work and Allvin et. als. (2006) description of the new, unregulated, flexible labor market which makes work feel more boundless. The study was realized through six qualitative interviews with people in different ages who worked from home in different occupations. Through analysis of the informants answers, compatibility between theory and empirical data emerged when experiences of increased efficiency and free time was of regular occurrence, the analysis also showed that many of the informants experienced the demarcation between work and personal life as obscure. A conclusion that the study makes is that within flexible work arrangements such as remote work it seems to be much more up to the individual to draw her own boundaries, to determine what remote work means is a concern mainly reserved for the individual.
