Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine Swedish students’ knowledge of Spanish varieties and their attitudes towards them. More precisely the study investigates students’ knowledge of linguistic differences between Spanish from Spain and Latin America and their attitudes towards them, but also their attitudes toward four specific Spanish varieties. This research is based on a qualitative and a direct method which is carried out through semi-structured interviews and the verbal guise-technique. The analysis is based on the opinions of ten Swedish informants studying Spanish. All informants are between 15 and 18 years old and have studied Spanish between 4 to 5 years. The results of the study show that the informants have a superficial knowledge about the biggest linguistic differences between Spanish varieties. Furthermore, the outcome of this study presents that the students problematize the linguistic differences between the Spanish spoken by their teacher and the Spanish spoken in different working materials. It is also concluded that the informants orientate and base their linguistic attitudes on the varieties of their pastor present teachers. This paper also indicates that the informants can have both negative and positive linguistic preferences towards the same attitude object.
