Design and Evaluation of a Solar Driven Electric Moped
Dalarna University, School of Technology and Business Studies, Energy and Environmental Technology.
2009 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
Abstract [en]

Today, more and more electric mopeds are used in our life to replace gasoline driven mopeds. There was a plan by Teknoland AB, co-operating with Mats Bilar AB and Främby Udde AB, to design a solar driven electric moped and equip the tourist place Främby Udde in Falun with it. There are several constraints about funds, time and laboratory equipments in the realisation of this plan. The purpose of this thesis project was to design a possible solar driven electric moped which had low cost and simple structure and evaluate it. In the end, a 250W/24V electric moped was chosen as a prototype and connected to a bicycle cart to place a PV panel was selected as design plan. A series of tests of its performance and battery charging characteristic with sunlight irradiations were done after determining the design plan. It was found that the solar driven electric moped can cover distance of around 16.8 km with maximum power which is better than its prototype performance (12.6 km), but it does not meet the design requirements completely yet which needs the solar driven electric moped to be used for one-day traveling. So some available improvement plans about constructional design and components choosing for the further research were discussed in the final part.
