Abstract [en]
In search for a new musical expression, the author’s own creation; RoboDrummer (RD)
– a newly invented, MIDI-controlled electromechanical, drumming machine – is closely
analyzed in terms of sound, time and interaction, and then compared to its precursors;
the human drummer, the drum machine & other robotic drummers. Although far from a
robotic virtuoso, the findings show in what unique ways RD both de-humanizes the
human drum performance and humanizes, as well as embodies, the virtual drum
machine. Potential musical applications and technical improvements are suggested to
further develop RD into a more engaging and futuristic live performance.
