Response of parents in drug treatment : - A qualitative interview study regarding the treatment staff´s experience of support need in parents with addiction at institutional home. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

There is a lack of knowledge concerning the importance of parenthood for people with substance abuse problems. The purpose of the study was to investigate how treatment workers' treatment of parents with substance abuse problems can be influenced by gender issues. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six people working at a home for care or housing. The study shows that the parenting role of drug abusers is not taken into account, the clients are being seen primarily as addicts, second as women or men, and are last seen as parents. The results show that treatment staff find that mothers are considered to be more important for the child / children than fathers, which is due to stereotype gender norms. The fact that father's parenthood and relationship with the child / children are not consider as important is something that reflects on what support is requested and what kind of support that is available.
