Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of this qualitative study was to examine features of ”good girls” in high school, which methods that is used in treatment with them and to explore the potential risks they may be facing, all from school counselors point of view. Six semistructured interviews were made with high school counselors employed in central Sweden. The results showed that ”good girls” is a group that strives for fulfillment of both their own and others expectations. They possess many strengths and have the ability to achieve much in life, but is also in need of support to get there. They tend to suffer from poor self-esteem, which is the main thing that the school counselors aim to strenghten in this group. The primary risk for ”good girls” is considered to be mental illness, which is a probable consequence of poor self-esteem and the search for confirmation from others to feel worthy.
