Patient's experience of being cared for in an emergency department : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: People who seek care at an emergency department have one thing in common: that their experience of ill health is acute. Some patients found it difficult to adapt to the new care environment. The waiting time for these patients may vary from a few minutes to several hours depending on the patient's condition and patient flow which can lead to patients leaving the emergency department without receiving care.

Aim: Purpose of this study was to describe the patient's experience of being cared for in an emergency department.

Method: The study has been carried out in the form of a general literature review where eighteen articles was selected for the result. The article searches were carried out in the databases Cinahl, Svemed + and PubMed. In addition, manual searches were made.

Results: The majority of patients in the articles experienced the deficiencies of communication, treatment, information, patient participation and long waiting times before they were allowed to meet healthcare professionals. The patients experienced this as frustrating and they felt vulnerable. In some articles, patients were respected and their integrity preserved. There were differences of experience in age and gender.

Conclusion: There are several factors that can affect the patient's experience of being cared for at an emergency department. What is the most important for the nurse's future work is patient participation and person-centered care
