The story of the storytelling : The story's impact and significance for relatives of sharing their life story (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In this qualitative study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with six relatives of people with mental illness or drug abuse who told their life story to others. The purpose of the study was to describe the significance and the perceived influence of the story. Through qualitative content analysis, themes were interpreted: counteract deviation, reach togetherness, act as a model despite risks, take command and experience liberation. The study`s empirical material was linked to previous research and the theory of SOC, Sense of Coherence. The study shows that telling their life story is important because it feels meaningful to help others, that silence is broken and that they feel fellowship. The importance of others meeting up and listening, as well as being ready before the life story takes place is emphasized in the interviews. The storytelling affects the relatives, they experience an acceptance and understanding of themselves and their lives, feel stronger and to a certain extent they experience better well-being.
