Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of the experience of identity among young women with immigrant backgrounds. In addition, a sub-purpose is to study whether the residential area has an impact on their sense of identity. Six qualitative interviews were conducted. The results showed that the young women live with a dual identity. The women are torn because they are not seen as Swedes and are instead being seen as immigrants. Women perceive their identity as difficult to cope with because they are forced to compromise between their two identities. The women felt safe with their friends because they could be themselves in contrast to their experiences from their families and the society. The result also shows that the residential area has an impact on their identity. The study shows that there is a need for further research on the subject to create a better understanding.
