Women's description of post-natal care at a Swedish hospital (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Postnatal care duration has been significantly decreased in high-income countries. Women want to have control over the postnatal care type. In order for the midwife to be able to give women good support, it is important for the women to describe what they require in postnatal care.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to describe women's experience of postnatal care at a hospital in Northern Central Sweden.

Method: This study is a quantitative retrospective cross-sectional study in which data were collected via a survey. In this study, 91 women participated in 2019 between October and the first of December.

Results: Overall, the results showed that the women were very satisfied with the postnatal care. There was inadequate information on breastfeeding and support. The women felt satisfied and safe when they got their partner with them at the hospital.

Conclusion: The majority of women were generally satisfied with their postnatal care. Health care personnel will continue to work with personalized care and will include partners in postnatal to create good health and well-being for the new family.

Clinical applicability: With more knowledge of what women require in postnatal period, the midwife can develop her individual care and support for the women in postnatal duration. Developing knowledge through evidence is the foundation of the midwife's profession. To implement improvements, more knowledge is needed. Support for women can be improved by continuously raising this topic among health care professionals.
