Abstract [sv]

Det finns begränsat med forskning som lyfter skolkuratorns perspektiv och

upplevelser av sin arbetssituation och yrkesroll inom skolan. Syftet med studien var

att undersöka hur skolkuratorer upplever förväntningar på deras yrkesroll från lärare

och rektorer och hur de hanterar dessa samt hur de upplever sitt handlingsutrymme

inom skolan. Metoden i studien var kvalitativ och semistrukturerade intervjuer

genomfördes med sex skolkuratorer. Studiens tolkningsram var rollteorin samt

teorin om förhandlad ordning. Studien visade att skolkuratorns roll är omfattande

och påverkas av skolkuratorn själv, omgivande normer och värderingar samt lärare

och rektorers förväntningar. Vidare visade studien på att förväntningar bäst hanteras

genom dialoger som leder till förbättrad samverkan mellan de olika professionerna.

Slutsatsen är att skolkuratorernas handlingsutrymme upplevs som stort men hämmas

av organisatoriska förutsättningar.

Abstract [en]

There is a limited amount of research on the school counselors’ perspective and

perception of their work situation and professional role within the school. The aim

of the study was to explore how school counselors’ perceive expectations of their

professional role by teachers and principals, how they handle these expectations and

how they perceive their discretion within the school. The method was qualitative

and semi-structured interviews were conducted with six school counselors. The

theoretical framework of the study were Role theory and the theory of Negotiated

order. The study showed that the role of the school counselor is extensive and

influenced by the school counselor itself, surrounding values and norms and also the

expectations of teachers and principals. Further, the study showed that expectations

are best managed through dialogues which leads to improved cooperation between

the different professions. The conclusion is that the school counselors’ perception

of discretion is large, but that organizational conditions inhibit their ability to utilize

it.
