Swedish know-how in the field of sustainable urban development has garnered increased interest abroad in recent decades, in terms of both Swedish-inspired urban design practice and the export of Swedish environmentally sustainable solutions. Ulf Ranhagen examines why and how the Swedish government initiated the developmentof a conceptual platform called SymbioCity in order to respond to an increasing international demand for Swedish know-how. He emphasises that solutions cannot simply be copy-pasted from one planning context to another, but require a mutual exchange of knowledge and the building of relations of trust over time.
