Immigration in Sweden : A qualitative study of second-generation immigrants' experiences of obstacles and opportunities in the labor market (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to explore what conditions people with a different ethnic backround that are born in Sweden believe that they are faced with in the labour market. Six individuals with a different ethnic background were interviewed by qualitative semistructured interviews. By using the theory of etablerade och outsiders, det dramaturgiska perspektivet and the theory of stigma an analysis was made of the collected empirical data. The study shows that the interviewees feel that multilingualism creates opportunities on the labour market. The study also shows that the interviewees feel that the difficulties that people with a different ethnic background face in the labour market has to do with prejudice and external attributes. Furthermore the study concluded that the interviewees felt a stigma surrounding the concept of second generation immigrant, in the sense that in true meaning they are not immigrants since they have not immigrated. The study also illustrates that there are individuals with a different ethnic background who do not experience difficulties related to their background, unlike what some other previous research showed.
