Electrical coupler cover: Evaluation from a material-technical perspective

Abstract [en]

The purpose of the electrical coupler cover is to protect the electrical contacts underneath. The electrical coupler cover is today made of a metallic material that conducts electricity. In the event of a collision, the electrical coupler cover can be deformed. This creates physical contact with the pins and short-circuit the current, which can lead to several problems. The task will be to look at if there are non-metallic materials that do not conduct electricity and meet the requirements that are set for the cover. Composites are the materials which are evaluated, and the results is that glass fibre reinforced polymer is the most suitable material. Since the structure of the polymer and the fibres orientation has a major influence on the material properties it is possible to tailor the composite for specific properties. Polymers generally have low electrical conductivity which is important for the application. With the help of a computer program and the set requirements, some possible composites were found and then compared with each other. When the materials were compared to each other it was found that the design for the cover will need to change if a composite is used. The wall thickness of the cover must be increased or otherwise strengthen compared to the metallic version.
