Abstract [en]

This research tries to find an answer to the question about how the names of thecharacters and place names have been translated in the Japanese version of theMoomin novel Finn Family Moomintroll (Trollkarlens hatt), by Tove Jansson, andconsider the possible reasons for the chosen strategies. The English translations ofthe same names were also used as comparison. Using a case study approach, thenames were collected from the original novel in Swedish as well as its Japanese andEnglish translations. The data was analyzed by using Lincoln Fernandes’ list of tentranslation procedures of names as a base. The results underline that most of thenames were transcribed into katakana by using transcription. Rendition andsubstitution occurred frequently, while addition and deletion were used occasionally.Since transcription was the most used strategy, the semantic connotations that canbe found in the original Swedish names are often lost during the translation process.
