School counselors’ perspectives on adolescent mental health in relation to social media (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

There is a concern that social media may be a contributing factor to increase mental health issues among adolescents, while research also shows that social media has positive consequences. The aim is to investigate school counselors’ experiences of the impact of social media on adolescent mental health, also addressing how they deal with this in the workplace. Seven semi-structured interviews were conducted with school counselors working at lower and upper secondary schools in Sweden. The results indicate social media as having negative consequences for adolescent mental health due to the fact that adolescents are constantly available, social media being a space for exclusion and comparison. Social media also contains positive factors as it can be a place for identity building and inclusion. School counselors deal with this by reflecting and turning a spotlight on this in their work. In conclusion, indications are that more studies are required within the field.
