"Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat". Women, War and Clothes in Great Britain During the Second World War. (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Eve in Overalls and Make Do and Mend were information brochures published in Britain during World War II to inform about the different work roles women took on in society during the war years and how all household chores could best be mastered in times of war. The focus of the essay is on how gender and fashion interacted and how this was expressed in the brochures. It also sheds light on how the changed situation for women in society functioned as a catalyst for emancipation and the role that clothing and fashion played in this development.
