This study has investigated the prevalence of different word-formation processes among hybrid lettered words. The aims were to study what processes were the most common among these words and how letters are used in Chinese writing. Word-formation processes for Chinese words and lettered words were discussed. 684 hybrid lettered words sourced from A Practical Dictionary of Lettered Words were analysed and the share of each word-formation process was measured andpresented statistically. Other linguistic aspects such as word length and use of letters were also discussed. The analysis showed that half of the words were borrowings and the most frequent wordformationprocess was loan-blending. A third of the words was formed through more than one process, many of these words had a complex inner structure. Hybrid lettered words were also formed through compounding, affixation, abbreviation and analogy. This study showed that the characteristics of hybrid lettered words differ from those of other Chinese words in terms of wordlength and the prevalence of borrowing as a frequent word-forming process. Loan-blending was found to be the main process forming hybrid lettered words since it utilised the economical potential of using letters and the understandability preserved in using characters while also benefiting from a close resemblance to the borrowed word. Many words were also found to benatively coined showing that hybrid lettered words were not only formed under the influence of foreign words. The creation of some words has benefited from the use of letters as a new set ofcharacters which functions are borrowed as a whole and further developed within the Chinese language.
