Abstract [en]

This study investigates the occurrence of metaphors in Donald Trump’s Save America speechunder the conceptual metaphor framework and takes a critical discourse analysis approach touncover the ideology constructed and reflected in the use of WAR and SPORTS metaphors todescribe the 2020 elections. A comparison between Donald Trump and other Republicancandidates who have also lost the presidential election is drawn. The result of this investigationshows that WAR metaphors are unusually predominant in Trump’s speech. Conversely,SPORTS metaphors are the metaphorical group with the lowest occurrence. While SPORTmetaphors structure the elections as a game, WAR metaphors establish Trump’s position as aprotector, reflecting values related to Lakoff’s “strict father” model. The findings of thisinvestigation contribute to an understanding of the language used by Trump to contest theresults of the 2020 elections.
