This is a qualitative study on the student perspective on the Swedish statecontrolled English knowledge requirements and their use in one teacher’sassignments. The study is performed at a voluntary basis on VET studentsin a Swedish independent upper secondary school. The method was twointerviews in focus groups, that also, through participant validation, resultedin a survey that was sent out to the classes involved in the research. Theresults showed that the students who use English daily in general, have aclearer understanding of the English knowledge requirements and their use, within specific assignments. Among the results, there was also a clearconnection to the students’ will to improve their own English and the needfor a more thorough explanation of the variations in the teacher’sassessments, based on the knowledge requirements. The use of English inSwedish society, and the need to improve one's own English, wassomething the students who participated in the study had a distinctperception of.
