The thesis investigates the influence of nature-based leisure opportunities on the well-being of international students, and on their motivation to study in Dalarna in connection with identifying the main motivational factor. A quantitative approach was applied, in form of a web-based questionnaire as data collection instrument. The sample of 107 respondents was collected among the current international students from Dalarna University who were on location in Dalarna. The literature review defines first the term nature and nature-based leisure opportunities in Dalarna, followed by the motivational factors of international students to study abroad with the corresponding ‘Push and Pull’ model. Based on the concept about the influence of the time spent in nature on the well-being of international students, one hypothesis came to be which was tested with inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics were applied to describe the sample characteristics and the motivation factors to study abroad. The results indicate that the main motivational factors for international students to study in Dalarna are the study programmes at Dalarna University and the Swedish Culture. Additionally, play nature-based leisure opportunities, such as natural attractions and outdoor activities an important role to study abroad. Moreover, the results suggest that there is no statistical significance, and therefore no relationship between the time spent in nature and the international students’ well-being. The thesis contributes with substantial insights to the expansion of knowledge on the study area of nature-based leisure opportunities for international students, the recruitment of students at Dalarna University, and indicates on which aspects further research is needed.
