Development of bracket for train coupler support and centering

Abstract [en]

The damper module and the support & centering module are two of the modules in Dellner Couplers automatic train coupler. The damper will absorb energy during coupling. In order for the damper to be in the correct, centered, position when uncoupled, support and centering is needed. These modules need to be attached, thus there is a two-parted bracket which consists of the front bracket and the shear off bracket. This project was carried out using a product development method and the aim was to design a bracket which fit a damper smaller than previous models. The task included studying whether it was possible to develop a modular bracket, which could operate for all module combinations. It turned out to be impossible to develop a modular bracket which operate for all module combinations within the time frame of this project. However, the project has resulted in a solution which can operate with 6 of the 9 damper lengths. The solution consists of a new shear off bracket and a front bracket which is very similar to the current one but has some modifications to be able to operate with the new, smaller damper. There are also suggestions on what can be done to develop solutions for the damper lengths not included in the solution and some ideas about which other components would need to be developed to obtain a more modular solution.
