Gymnasielärares syn på sociologins kärna och dess relevans för undervisningen

Abstract [en]

This essay is an addition to the ongoing discussion about the theoretical core of sociology. Students who meet sociology for the first time will after a time often say, “but what is sociology?” The answer to that question is not always easy to find due to the lack of a well-defined theoretical core and this makes teaching sociology all the more difficult. The focus of this essay has been to examine how the sociological core is viewed by Swedish high school teachers who are currently teaching sociology. The content teachers include in their planning and the form of support they have in that choice is also of interest for this study. Six teachers were interviewed about their views on the subject and about their own work. The results show that despite some similarities each teacher has a slightly different view of the sociological core. The content included in the class is the concepts stated in the curriculum as well as the teachers view of the core. The teachers find support in their view of the core among things like: student interest, gaps in student knowledge, current events, and textbooks. The teachers also made great use of thematic teaching to display the theoretical core.
