The purpose of this study is to develop knowledge about students’ perception of the art subject in the later years of the compulsory school, and whether it corresponds with how the subject is formed in the curriculum. The study uses a mixed method research, combining both qualitative and quantitative features. The research has been done in three different schools throughout Sweden, where students from grades seven, eight and nine have responded to a survey regarding their opinions and perception of the subject art in today’s school. The result shows that art is highly appreciated amongst the students, and many refer to it as fun and relaxing, and some describes it as different from the rest of the school. What the survey results also show is that a majority of the students prefers to work with traditional techniques such as painting and drawing and when doing so they like to create freely. The curriculum has over time changed towards art as communication and visual culture, but the result shows that the students maintain the more traditional ideas of the subject as learning to draw and creating pictures in different techniques.
