People with mental illness and their experiences of care via e-health : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background There is a constant digitalization of healthcare, where e-health is becoming an increasingly natural way of conducting care. In connection with increased mental illness in society, greater emphasis is being placed on health care to increase the availability of support services. Via e-health, care can be provided in a more cost-effective and easily accessible way to support people with mental illness.

Aim This literature study is aimed to describe how people with mental illness experience care via e-health.

Method This study is conducted as a literature review where 16 scientific articles were included, of which 15 were qualitative and 1 quantitative. These articles have been quality reviewed and analyzed. The databases used were CINAHL and PubMed.

Results People with mental illness experience e-health as an easily accessible, effective and helpful tool to seek care through. Self-care contributes to people with mental illness experiencing better well-being in their illness. They experience increased commitment to their state of health and increased willingness to perform self-care. Despite most of the benefits of providing care via e-health, the absence of human contact is perceived as an obstacle.

Conclusions E-health makes the support and accessibility of healthcare possible for everyone regardless of demography. It contributes to make it easier to apply, get the support and information you need about your health condition. Through e-health, people with mental illness can gain stronger confidence in their self-efficacy and be encouraged to in higher extent perform self-care.
