Is Sweden being kept safe in Sinai and Lebanon? : Arménytt regarding UN-peacekeeping operations in Sinai and Lebanon (English)
Abstract [en]
Between 1956 and 1994 the Armed Forces of Sweden sent Peacekeeping troops to the Middle East. They took part in UNEF I & II, keeping Israel and Egypt apart, UNIFIL in southern Lebanon and UNTSO, the observer missions around Israel. During this time period there was a major shift in the relations between Israel and Sweden. Furthermore Arabic, Swedish and Israeli society went through extensive changes. In this essay official Swedish military press will be studied to see how the the Swedish Armed Forces as an organisation viewed the conflict and its own contribution during the time period 1951 to 1994. Particular regard will be given to how the soldiers themselves were motivated, how the organisation perceived it’s contributions and whether the Armed Forces had a different perspective than the Swedish Foreign Office.
