What do older people with a risk of falls perceive as barriers and motivating factors for physical activity after a training intervention? : A qualitative interview study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background People over the age of 65 is the biggest healthcare consumers. Work with preventative healthcare measures such as physical activity you could prevent or decrease many age-related illnesses and falls that cause hospitalization. It’s known that many older people don’t meet the recommendations when it comes to daily physical activity. Inactivity, muscle weakness, drug consumption are factors that are associated with a higher risk of falls. Physical activity and exercise are methods that can reduce the risk of falls and with that the need to work with motivation to maintain an increased level of physical activity over time.

Aim The aim of this study was to explore what older people with a risk of falls perceive as barriers and motivating factors for physical activity after a training intervention.

Method Data was conducted via a qualitative interview with a descriptive design. A semistructured interview-guide was used. Eleven participants between the ages 75-91 took part in the study. They had all completed a training intervention with a physiotherapist. The data was then analysed with a content analysis.

Results Results show different barriers and motivational factors for staying physically active with several factors being linked to the biopsychosocial model. Within the study population thereis a big difference in factors. Four main categories and nine subcategories were identified.

Conclusion Older people have vastly different experiences when it comes to barriers and motivational factors regarding physical activity. The result can hopefully inspire physiotherapist to pay more attention to hindering and motivational factors regarding physical activity.
