Abstract [en]

Aim: This study aims to explore the barriers experienced in the knowledge sharing process in GVTs in Nigeria and Sweden, also to understand how to manage these barriers.

Methods: The study is based on a qualitative research method, a template analysis of 12 semi-structured interviews was carried out. The sampling technique adopted is a type of purposive sampling called snowball sampling technique. This resulted in respondents in knowledge-intensive roles in the chosen MNCs in Sweden and Nigeria. Zoom interviews were conducted in two batches in April and July 2022.

Results: Findings show that lack of trust and lack of motivation to share knowledge are not seen as barriers in both countries. Lack of time to share knowledge, difference in time zones, technological factor of internet connection disruption are barriers in both countries. Cultural diversity is partially seen as barriers in both countries while language difference is partially seen as a barrier only in Sweden, it is not a barrier in Nigeria. Lastly, lack of social interaction is not seen as a barrier in Nigeria but it is partially seen as a barrier in Sweden. Difference innational holidays, emergency absence from work and gender bias were found to be new barriers in Nigeria while lack of access to database was found to be a new barrier in Sweden.

Conclusions: Organizational culture, years of experience, personality type and company size can affect the perception and management of knowledge sharing barriers. Managers can adaptthe use of rotating teams in managing time zone differences and be more aware of the preventive effect of gender bias on knowledge sharing in GVTs.
