Bakgrund: Övervikt hos barn är en av de stora folkhälsoutmaningarna i världen idag och det kan medföra allvarliga konsekvenser för barnets fysiska och psykiska hälsa. Som sjuksköterska inom barnhälsovården ingår det i uppdraget att bedöma tillväxt, hälsa och utveckling hos barnet och agera när det behövs. Övervikt är stigmatiserat och sjuksköterskor tycker det är svårt att berätta för föräldrarna om barnets övervikt då de är rädda att förlora deras förtroende. Syfte: Syftet med denna studie var att beskriva föräldrars upplevelser av när sjuksköterskor inom barnhälsovården samtalar om övervikt hos deras barn. Metod: Semistrukturerade intervjuer genomfördes med nio föräldrar och materialet analyserades med kvalitativ innehållsanalys utifrån Elo och Kyngäs. Resultat: En övergripande huvudkategori identifierades, Ett känsloladdat ämne, vilken mynnade ut i fyra generiska kategorier; Att hantera situationen, Föräldrarollen, En önskan att skydda barnen samt Barnhälsovårdssjuksköterskan. Det framkom att ämnet är känsligt för föräldrarna, som skuldbelägger sig själva och sjuksköterskans bemötande har stor betydelse. Slutsats: BHV-sjuksköterskorna och föräldrarna vill det bästa för barnet men har olika perspektiv och behöver en ökad förståelse för varandra. Föräldrar behöver få kunskap om hur vården bedömer tillväxt och BHV-sjuksköterskor behöver vara lyhörda mot föräldrarna och ge dem tid att smälta beskedet. Fokus bör ligga på hälsosamma levnadsvanor oavsett vikt.

Background: Overweight in children is one of the major public health challenges in the world today, which can cause serious consequences regarding the children's physical and mental health. As a nurse in the Child Health care, it is part of the assignment to assess the growth, health and development of the child and act when necessary. Overweight is stigmatized and the nurses find it difficult to tell the parents about the children's overweight, in fear of losing their trust. Aim: The purpose of this study was to describe parents' experiences of when the nurses in the child health care talk about overweight in their children. Method: This study was conducted via semi-structured interviews with nine parents and the data were analyzed using Elo and Kyngäs qualitative content analysis. Results: One main category was identified, An emotional subject, which resulted in four generic categories; Coping with the situation, The role of the parent, A desire to protect the Children and The Child health care Nurse. The result showed that this is a sensitive subject for the parents, who place the blame on themselves, and the nurse’s approach is of great importance. Conclusions: Both the parents and the CHC-nurses want what is best for the child, but they have different perspectives and need an increased understanding of each other. Parents need to gain knowledge about how the healthcare assesses growth and the CHC- nurses need to be responsive to the parents and give them time to process the information. The focus should be on healthy lifestyle choices regardless of weight.
