L’objectif de cette étude est de déterminer comment le français influence le wolof, une langue qui est en concurrence avec le français (la langue officielle) au Sénégal. Ce faisant, elle détermine le cadre historique et théorique de l’étude. À cause de sa longue histoire d’interactions avec les Français, le Sénégal a eu plus d’interactions avec les Français que les autres membres de l’AOF. Cela explique pourquoi les Sénégalais se tournent souvent vers le français lorsqu’ils communiquent et pourquoi de nombreux mots français font désormais partie du vocabulaire wolof. Les Sénégalais alternent souvent entre le français et le wolof, ce qui explique la pertinence du terme alternance codique ou code-switching. La méthode du mémoire est de faire une étude de cas. L’étude fait une analyse qualitative d’une vidéo présentant une jeune entrepreneure qui dirige son propre service de blanchisserie à Dakar. La locutrice parle en wolof urbain, ce qui présente la possibilité d’évaluer l’influence du français sur la langue wolof. L’étude conclut que la langue française a incontestablement affecté le wolof de diverses manières, à tel point qu’il est difficile d’imaginer que le wolof parlé dans les zones urbaines du Sénégal soit entièrement débarrassé du français.

The goal of this study is to determine how French influences Wolof, a language that competes with French (the official language) in Senegal. In doing so, it sets the historical and theoretical framework of the study. Due to long lasting contacts with the French, Senegal has had more interaction with the French than other members of French West Africa. This explains why locals often turn to French when communicating and why many French words have become part of Wolof vocabulary. The Senegalese often switch between French and Wolof, which is where the term “code switching” comes into the picture. The method of this paper is a case study. The study performs a qualitative analysis of the video presenting an interview with a young entrepreneur who runs her own laundry service in Dakar. The subject of the interview speaks in urban Wolof, which presents the option to assess the influence of French. It concludes that the French language has indeed affected Wolof in various ways, to an extent that makes it hard to imagine Wolof spoken in the urban areas of Senegal being cleared entirely of French.
