Intimate partner violence – nurses experiences in meeting exposed women in healthcare : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background Intimate partner violence is a social problem and many women are exposed to it. The nurse is responsible for the care of the woman and it is important that she can trust the nursing staff to be able to tell her about the situation she is in.

Aim The aim is to describe nurses' experiences of meeting abused women in health care.

Method The work was carried out as a literature review. Searches were made in the databases Cinahl, Pubmed and Psychinfo. There were 14 articles selected that were considered relevant for the aim. The articles were analyzed using review templates for qualitative and quantitative studies.

Results The result is presented in two main categories, Need for competence on the subject, Emotional impact. As well as four subcategories: Lack of knowledge, Need for education, An emotional burden, Emotional development.

Conclusions The results showed that nurses have a great need for more knowledge and training regarding intimate partner violence. Knowledge is needed about the subject and training is needed so that the nurses can more easily handle the meeting with the woman, both regarding their own feelings and how to give the woman the right help.
