Abstract [en]

Background: Gambia is among the countries where Under-five children face the steepest risks of death. Investigating determinants of health and outcomes among neonates can add to the understanding and improvement of neonatal health and survival.

Aim: This thesis aims to investigate the determinants of neonatal near misses and outcomes among all newborn babies born or referred to three major hospitals within 28 days in the Gambia during a three months study period in 2022.

Methodology: A multicenter prospective cohort study design was use in this study. The target population was all birth giving women with newborn babies born at the three study facilities during the study period, including near miss neonates who survive or die. The sample size was 136 babies with their mothers. Data collected from the three selected facilities in Greater Banjul Area, was statistically analyze using the SPSS software package.

Results: The study reported a total of 785 neonatal near miss events observed within the 28-day window of observation. The Neonatal Mortality Ratio (NMR) was 1.7 per 1,000 live births, The Neonatal Near Miss Ratio (NNMR) was 30.8, The Severe Neonatal Outcome Ratio (SNOR) was 30.5, The Neonatal Mortality Index (NMI) was 5.4, and the ratio of neonatal near miss and neonatal deaths cases was 18.3:1.

Conclusions: This study outcome conclusively indicated significant challenges to the chances of neonatal survival in the Gambia.
