Experiences of camera surveillance in residential areas (English)
Abstract [en]

The essay is a qualitative study and the method used to collect data was through semistructured interviews of seven respondents who live in different areas in Sweden that are see nas vulnerable areas. These areas have camera surveillance, and they are seen as dangerous areas in Sweden. The analysis of the collected material was then conducted using a thematic analysis. The purpose of this study is to investigate how adults experience living in a camera monitored vulnerable area. The aim of the study is to gain a deeper understanding of individual’s experiences of camera surveillance and how they may feel about it. The method that is used in this study is a qualitative method and an abductive approach, the goal of the study is to capture the respondent’s experiences of camera surveillance in their area. The results that the study showed were that the individuals have different attitudes towards camera surveillance. Some may believe that cameras contribute to personal safety by enabling authorities to monitor an area marked by crime. Through constant contact with authorities some respondents feel safe. However, it is discussed that camera surveillance only contributes to social exclusion, intrusion into privacy and the abuse of power by the authorities.
