Free to love and decide? : An analysis of fatality, free will and consciousness in three characters of the 17th century : Phèdre, Thésée and Rodrigue (English)
Abstract [fr]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to find out how the concept of fatality, free will and consciousness is expressed for some of the 17th century characters. The characters which we are going to analyse are tragic heros issued from two tragedies named Phèdre from Racine, and Le Cid from Corneille. We will study how the characters are struggling with destiny and how the decisions, the choices that characters make are influenced by fatality and free will. We will also analyse the role of culpability and bad conscience and how these two concepts allow the characters to know if they acted well or bad, and therefore make them responsible for their acting. Finally, we will study the biography of the two authors in order to try to understand the internal characteristics of the characters through the socio-cultural context in which the two authors lived.
