“The restrictions deprived me of my partner” : Analysis of free text responses from the national pregnancy survey (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, it meant a new everyday life for the pregnant women in Sweden. They came to be classified as a risk group and restrictions was introduced, the restrictions reduced the partner’s opportunity to participate during pregnancy and childbirth. Studies show that social support has a positive effect on pregnancy and childbirth and that lack of support during the pandemic contributed to increased distress to the pregnant women. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to shed light on women’s experiences of how restrictions affected pregnancy and childbirth during the Covid-19 pandemic. Method: The thesis is carried out as a qualitive content analysis with an inductive approach. The analyzed data were free text responses from the national pregnancy survey. Results: One theme and four categories emerged. The theme was need for support and the categories that were identified were non-participation, alone in the pregnancy, increased concerns, and reduced range of care. Conclusion: The result indicates that pregnant woman has not received the support needed during pregnancy and childbirth because of the restrictions imposed during the pandemic. Clinical implications: The writers hope that the thesis can contribute to an increased understanding of the pregnant woman’s need for support during pregnancy and childbirth. Hopefully the thesis will also contribute to insights in not repeating the same mistakes with restrictions if we are faced with similar situations in the future.
