Nurses’ experiences of palliative care at home : a literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

BackgroundPalliative care involves improving the quality of life for patients with incurable, progressive injury or disease. The home plays a significant role in the patient's well-being and quality of life and affects the nurse's ability to perform their work. The nurse's role inpalliative care involves patient care, support for relatives and collaboration with other professions.

AimThe aim of this study was to explore nurses’ experience of palliative care at home.

MethodThis is a structured literature review with inspiration from approaches from systematic reviews. In the databases PubMed and CINAHL, were twelve articles selected which were analyzed according to Friberg's four steps and quality checked using Nilsson's review template.

ResultsFour main categories were identified: the home becomes both a care environment and work environment, important to maintain relationships, emotional impact and experience of lack of education. Important to maintain relationships was presented in two subcategories: focus on cooperation with patient and relatives to create safety and cooperation with other professions created safety.

ConclusionsThe home environment was described as important for creating trusting and involving relationships with patients, relatives and other professions. Providing palliative care at home was described as both satisfying and demanding. The nurses were insufficiently prepared with knowledge to provide good palliative care at home.
