The present study aim to investigate the argumentation regarding objectives of Japan´s foreign policy towards the East Asian region. The scope of this study is to start from Berger´s (2003) study and constructivist prediction where the U.S military presence in the region would decline significantly. Japan and other states in the East Asian region will then have to take a direction towards economic growth and international cooperation or historically rooted suspicions and nationalist passions that could flare up pressure for competitive rearmament (Berger 2003). Within the scope of this study is also to examine if Wendt (1999) and his social constructivism can explain this argumentation.
