Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to produce an annotated English translation of Natsume Sōseki's novel Hen na oto (1911) and identify and translate culture-loaded words within the text. The goal is to find out what kind of cultural translation problems can arise when translating Natsume Sōseki's short story Hen na oto from Japanese to English and how may they be solved? These culture-loaded words are explained and strategies which were used to solve them in translation are also discussed and analyzed in the paper. Additionally, while addressing these translation problems, this paper aims to justify the opted solutions and explain the reasoning behind them. The results show that the majority of the culture-loaded words belonged to the material culture category, which were translated mostly by retaining the original terms or by using descriptive and functional equivalents.
