Abstract [en]

In an increasingly interconnected world, the Ludvika municipality in Sweden has undergone a transformation with the arrival of newcomers from different countries, reshaping the local cultural landscape and presenting both challenges and opportunities in the education of newly arrived students. This thesis investigates Ludvika's support for these students, focusing on the role of educators in nurturing their motivation, the pedagogical approaches used to facilitate their growth, and the challenges faced by both teachers and students.

The research questions delve into the teachers' role in supporting and motivating newcomer students, effective pedagogical approaches, and the challenges they encounter. Five English teachers from different schools shared their experiences, highlighting the diverse strategies and insights they bring to the classroom. These educators emphasize the importance of nurturing motivation and enthusiasm, recognizing their crucial role in the academic and personal development of newcomer students.

The study also underscores the significance of pedagogical diversity, tailored support, and adapting teaching methods to different age groups. Challenges faced by both teachers and students, such as language barriers and cultural adaptation, are multifaceted and require a comprehensive approach for support and integration. To address these challenges, Ludvika municipality has implemented various strategies, emphasizing the right of all students to receive an education tailored to their needs. The study draws on educational theories, including Vygotsky's Sociocultural Theory and Bruner's Theory, to underscore the importance of teachers' active involvement in fostering cognitive and linguistic growth in newcomer students.

Overall, this thesis sheds light on the complex and multifaceted landscape of supporting and motivating newcomer students in Ludvika municipality, offering valuable insights to enhance the educational experiences and outcomes of these students and promote an inclusive and welcoming community.
