Bakgrund: Förlossningsupplevelsen kan påverkas av både bakgrundsfaktorer, personlighet och känsla av sammanhang.

Syfte: Syftet med studien var att undersöka om det fanns ett samband mellan personlighet, känsla av sammanhang samt bakgrundsfaktorer, förlossningsutfall samt känslor i samband med förlossning.

Metod: Kvantitativ retrospektiv tvärsnittsstudie med 776 kvinnor som fött barn efter spontan förlossningstart under ett år på en förlossningsavdelning i Mellansverige. Deskriptiv analys medchi-square test, t-test och korrelationsanalys gjordes.

Resultat: Förstföderskor hade i större grad mindre känsla av kontroll under förlossningen och omföderskor skattade sin psykiska hälsa lägre. Kvinnor som födde vaginalt skattade lägre på personlighetstypen Agreeableness och högre på positiva känslor. SIMP och SOC visade statistisk signifikans mellan Extraversion, Emotional stability, Conscientiousness och Openness. Vid SIMP och fysisk hälsa sågs statistisk signifikans vid Emotional stability ochConscientiousness. Vid SIMP och psykisk hälsa sågs statistisk signifikans vid Extraversion och Emotional stability. Vid SIMP och positiva känslor sågs statistisk signifikans vid Extraversion och Emotional stability. Vid SIMP och negativa känslor sågs statistisk signifikans vid Emotional stability. SOC visade statistisk signifikans vid fysisk hälsa, psykisk hälsa, positiva känslor och negativa känslor. Statistisk signifikans fanns även på psykisk hälsa och fysisk hälsa, positiva och negativa känslor.

Slutsats: För förstföderskor och omföderskor fanns statistisk signifikans i känsla av kontroll. SOC kan påverka en födande kvinnas förlossningsupplevelse samt psykisk hälsa, fysisk hälsa, positiva känslor samt negativa känslor. Känslor hade även ett samband med den fysiska hälsan och den psykiska hälsan. Personlighetsdrag kan påverka förlossningsupplevelsen.

Klinisk tillämpbarhet: Barnmorskor kan använda resultatet för att främja en positiv förlossningsupplevelse och vidare studier behövs för att stärka resultatet. 

Background: The birth experience can be affected by both background factors, personality and sense of context.

Aim: The purpose of the study was to investigate whether there was a relationship between personality, sense of coherence and background factors, birth outcomes and feelings in connection with birth.

Methods: Quantitative retrospective cross-sectional study with 776 women who gave birth after spontaneous onset of labor during one year at a maternity ward in central Sweden. Descriptive analysis with chi-square test, t-test and correlation analysis was done.

Results: Primiparous mothers had a greater sense of not being in control during childbirth and multiparous mothers rated their mental health lower. Women who gave birth vaginally scored significantly lower on the Agreeableness personality type compared to women who gave birth instrumentally. Women who gave birth vaginally also rated positive emotions higher. SIMP and SOC showed statistical significance between Extraversion, Emotional stability, Conscientiousness and Openness. For SIMP and physical health, statistical significance was seen for Emotional stability and Conscientiousness. For SIMP and mental health, statistical significance was seen for Extraversion and Emotional stability. For SIMP and positive emotions, statistical significance was seen for Extraversion and Emotional stability. For SIMP and negative emotions, statistical significance was seen for Emotional stability. SOC showed statistical significance in physical health, mental health, positive emotions and negative emotions. Statistical significance was also found for mental health and physical health, positive and negative emotions.

Conclusion: For primiparous mothers and multiparous mothers there was significance in sense of control. Sense of coherence can affect a laboring woman's birth experience as well as mental health, physical health, positive emotions as well as negative emotions. Emotions also had a connection with physical health and mental health. Personality traits can affect the birth experience.

Clinical applicability: Midwives can use the results to promote a positive birth experience and further studies are needed to strengthen the results.
