Fernández, Århus: Aarhus Universitetsforlag, 2024, p. 520-533Chapter in book (Refereed)
Abstract [fr]

Abstract [en]

The article aims to show that the novel Tout-monde (1993) by the Martinican writer Édouard Glissant (1928-2011) represents a turning point in the work of this author. It is in fact in this whirlwind novel that Glissant enlarges the geographic horizon of his work from Martinique to the whole world, an expansion accompanied by the philosophical concept “Tout-monde” of which the novel constitutes both the defense and the illustration. The analysis focuses on aspects of the novel which demonstrate an effort by the writer to connect a postcolonial issue with a broader philosophical vision. We will thus see how certain theoretical concepts, taken from his previous writings, are the subject of a reframing in Tout-monde, but also how the writer goes about constructing a self-image, an ethos, which corresponds to his new literary and philosophical project, both anchored in Martinique and open to the world.
