Nurses' Experiences of Palliative Care for Children : A Literature Review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background Nurses are the care profession that works closest to families and thus have an important role in contact with families who have a seriously ill child. Working closely with families of children receiving palliative care can also be emotionally taxing for nurses and requires a lot of knowledge. Therefore, it is important to find out how nurses experience the palliative care of children and what they need to feel safe in providing care for both the children and their relatives.

Aim The aim was to describe nurses' experiences of providing palliative care to children.

Method The literature review was based on two quantitative and eight qualitative articles that were searched in the databases PubMed and CINAHL. The ten selected articles have been analyzed based on a manifest content analysis.

Results Nurses experienced security if they had good knowledge of palliative care for children, however, this knowledge was often deficient. In the result, three main categories were created - emotions, the importance of knowledge and professional approach. Subsequently, seven subcategories could be formulated – feeling of inadequacy, difficulty managing one's own emotions, experiencing a need for knowledge, the importance of cooperation within the team, the importance of communication, showing empathy towards the child and the importance of being there for those close to you.

Conclusions Knowledge of palliative care and training in it is something that gives nurses security. Exchanging experiences with colleagues gives the nurses support in difficult times and develops the strength to be able to handle the impending death. Having a good communication and relationship with the families is experienced by the nurses as something positive.
