New Parents’ Depictions of Birth on Facebook: A qualitative study

Abstract [en]
Background Recently birth depictions have become a common thing to share on social media. Facebook is one of the platforms where parents can publicly share their birth stories. Mothers and fathers may depict childbirth differently. These depictions often create expectations for future parents, society and this influences sexual and reproductive health.
Aim This thesis aims to explore mothers’ and fathers’ depictions of birth on Facebook.
Methodology This study is a qualitative study using an inductive approach. Researchers collected 143 posts by reviewing two thousand posts from the 20 most common hashtags that were related to parents’ birth depictions on Facebook. Reflective thematic analysis was used to analyze the data.
Results Results showed the following: common themes for parents were Gratitude and Appreciation towards God and Surrounded people, Complex feelings after birth (with 2 sub-themes). Mothers’s themes were Fulfilled and unfulfilled Childbirth Expectations with 2 sub-themes, Detailed Descriptions of the Birth Process. Fathers’ theme was The Beginning of Fatherhood with 2 sub-themes.
Conclusions These personal parents'birth stories are important to address the challenges and expectations of childbirth in society. Knowledge of these results can improve the quality of childbirth experience both by health providers and society
