Bakgrund Idag är kroniska sjukdomar mindre komplicerade för hälso- och sjukvården att hantera och behandla, expanderad vetenskaplig forskning ger förutsättningar till utvecklade läkemedel och behandlingsformer. Följerna blir en ökad livslängd på befolkningen än tidgare århundraden och detta medför stora utmaningar för hälso-och sjukvården men främst den pallaitiva vården. Stora utmaningar som ställer anspråk på vårdpersonalen att erhålla rätt kompetens och kunskap för att ge god vård till patienterna.

Syfte Litteraturöversiktens syfte är att sammanställa sjuksköterskors upplevelser av att ge palliativ vård till äldre patienter.

Metod Detta examensarbete är genomfört enligt en systematisk litteraturöversikt. Genomsökningar i två olika databaser CINAHL och PubMed har 13 vetenskapliga artiklar tagits fram, kvalitetsgranskats och analyserats.

Resultat Sjuksköterskornas upplevelser av palliativ vård av äldre sammanställdes och utvisade behov av förbättring inom omvårdnadsarbetet. Resultatet är indelat i tre huvudkategorier, emotionella faktorer, pedagogiska och tidsrelaterade utmaningar och arbetsmiljöfaktorer. De sex underkategorier innefattar att känna rädsla, att uppleva stress och känslan av otillräcklighet i arbete, att uppleva bristande kunskap och erfarenhet, att uppleva tidsbristi omvårdnadsarbetet, att arbeta under högbelastad miljö, att uppleva behov av samverkan och vikten av reflektion.

Slutsats Sjuksköterskors upplevelser av att arbeta med palliativa vård av äldre är ett kunskapskrävande och påfrestande arbete. Sjuksköterskorna upplevde flera känslor som påverkade deras arbete och utövandet av palliativ vård. Utbildning och kunskap inom den palliativa vården bör undersökas vidare då det är ett centralt ämne som bör tas upp oftare, för utvecklingen skull. 

Background Today chronic diseases are less complicated for the healthcare system to handle and treat, expanded scientific research provides the conditions for developed medicines and forms of treatment. The results of this is an increased life expectancy of the population compared to earlier centuries, this entails major challenges for health care, but primarily palliative care. Large challenges that place demands on the healthcare staff to obtain the right skills and knowledge to provide good care to patients.

Aim To describe nurses' experiences of providing palliative care for older people.

Method This thesis is carried out according to a systematic literature review. Through searches in two different databases, CINAHL and PubMed, 13 scientific articles have been produced, quality checked and analysed.

Results The nurses' experiences of palliative care for the elderly were compiled and showed a need for improvement in the nursing work. The result is divided into three main categories, emotional factors, pedagogical and time-related challenges and work environment factors. The six subcategories include feeling fear, experiencing stress and the feeling of inadequacy at work, experiencing a lack of knowledge and experience, experiencing a lack of time in nursing work, working in a high-stress environment, experiencing the need for collaboration and the importance of reflection.

Conclusions Nurses' experiences of working with palliative care for the elderly is a knowledge demanding and stressful job. The nurses experienced several emotions that affected their work and the practice of palliative care. Education and knowledge in palliative care needs to be investigated further as it is a central topic that should be covered more often for the sake of development.
