“Considering how much physical activity affects the health of children and young people, not having the person who is best at it in the schools is completely preposterous.” : A qualitative interview study with the student welfare team´s experiences of the physiotherapeutic competence (English)
Abstract [sv]

Ökad kunskap kring fysioterapeuternas arbete i elevhälsan behövs.

Abstract [en]

Background: Very few physiotherapists work in student welfare in Sweden today despite the fact they are considered experts in physical activity and motor skills. Physical activity is also an important tool against mental health problems which is a priority for student welfare. In the guidelines for student welfare there are no requirements to include the physiotherapeutic competence. Increased knowledge about the physiotherapist’s work in student welfare is needed.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the student welfare team’s experiences of the importance of the competencies of the physiotherapist in their organization.

Method: A qualitative study design with semi-structured interviews was used. The physiotherapists working in student welfare in Sweden were identified and their student welfare colleagues were asked to participate in the study. Nine individuals were interviewed on zoom or phone. They represented two different student welfare teams and six different professions. The authors transcribed the interviews and meaning units have been condensed and the data was then analyzed.

Results: The analysis generated following three categories: Physiotherapist -the children’s right in student welfare, A well needed resource with specific competencies for student welfare and Physical activity as a tool for wellbeing. The colleagues have positive experiences of having access to a physiotherapist in the student welfare team. The students have felt safe having the possibility to contact a physiotherapist in their school environment. The competencies of the physiotherapist have contributed to the student’s health and wellbeing. Motorassessment and extra training for students´ with special needs have led to increased self-confidence and enhanced learning. The physical touch during a physiotherapist appointment is described as something that has made students open up about their mental wellbeing.

Conclusion: This study shows that the student welfares team sees the competencies of the physiotherapist as a well needed resource. According to the result and considering the challenges of physical inactivity and mental illness in today’s society the physiotherapeutic competence is assessed to be well suited as a part of the efforts to strengthen student welfare.
